Fishing the Green

Fishing the Green is an annual event for some and a rite-of-passage for others. Let our well-stocked Flaming Gorge Fly Shop help you get off to the right start on the Green River, one of the premier trout waters in the country. After a fulfilling day of landing huge browns & rainbows, you will appreciate the quiet comforts of a hot meal and soft bed at Red Canyon Lodge.

The Green River can be fished by wading or from a raft or drift boat. If you need help in arranging a guided trip to the Green, one of our staff members will be happy to connect you to the right people. Click here for a map of the Green River.

Get your fishing license on-line before you come to Utah! Go to wildlife.utah.gov/dwr/fishing.html.

The Green River in Dutch John, Utah is known for its diverse population of fish, including several different species of trout, bass, and catfish. The exact number of fish that live in the Green River in Dutch John is difficult to determine, as it can fluctuate depending on various factors such as water flow, temperature, and fishing pressure. Additionally, different sections of the river may have different fish populations.

The Green River is home to a variety of fish species, including:

Rainbow trout

Brown trout

Cutthroat trout

Smallmouth bass

Largemouth bass

Walleye

Catfish (channel and flathead)

It is important to note that the Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam is managed as a tailwater fishery, which means that the water temperature, flow, and water chemistry are controlled by the dam. These controlled conditions support a healthy population of fish and make the river an attractive destination for anglers.

With 11 state fishing records and two former world records, it’s no wonder that Flaming Gorge Reservoir is renowned as a trophy fishery. The 91-mile-long lake straddles Wyoming and Utah and offers boating services at three marinas – Buckboard, Lucerne and Cedar Springs. The most popular game fish in the Gorge are the trophy lake (mackinaw) trout, kokanee salmon and smallmouth bass.
